Glassco Separating Funnel — Squibb Shape with PTFE Stopcock
The Glassco Squibb shape separating funnel is a borosilicate 3.3 glass liquid-liquid extraction funnel manufactured to ISO standards, featuring a PTFE stopcock and PE stopper. The Squibb shape — characterised by its cylindrical body — provides the maximum usable volume for a given funnel height, making it the preferred choice for large-volume liquid-liquid extraction procedures where maximising the organic-to-aqueous phase ratio is important.
Without graduation markings, the clear borosilicate 3.3 glass body provides an unobstructed view of the two liquid phases during extraction and separation — enabling accurate phase boundary identification before draining. The PTFE stopcock provides excellent chemical resistance to the organic solvents commonly used in liquid-liquid extraction, eliminating the lubrication requirements and solvent compatibility limitations of glass stopcocks. Available in capacities from 50mL to 2000mL, supplied from Glassco’s European warehouse in the Netherlands.
Key Features
Squibb Shape — Maximum Volume Capacity
The cylindrical Squibb body provides the maximum usable volume for a given funnel height — particularly advantageous for large-volume extractions where maximising the volume difference between the organic and aqueous phases is important for extraction efficiency. The Squibb shape is well suited to preparative-scale extraction workflows in pharmaceutical research and analytical chemistry.
PTFE Stopcock — Chemically Resistant
The PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) stopcock provides outstanding chemical resistance to the full range of organic solvents used in liquid-liquid extraction, including chlorinated solvents, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and petroleum ethers. Unlike glass stopcocks, PTFE stopcocks require no grease lubrication — eliminating the risk of stopcock contamination of extracts and the maintenance requirements associated with greased glass stopcocks.
Without Graduation — Clear Phase Visibility
The absence of graduation markings on the funnel body provides maximum clarity for phase boundary observation — enabling accurate and confident identification of the organic and aqueous phase interface before drainage, reducing the risk of phase contamination during the extraction procedure.
PE Stopper Included
Each separating funnel is supplied with a PE stopper for the top opening, providing a secure seal during mixing and inversion steps in the extraction procedure.
NS Ground Glass Neck
NS ground glass neck joint ensures compatibility with standard laboratory stopper sizes and fittings across all capacity configurations.
Borosilicate 3.3 Glass
Excellent chemical resistance to the full range of solvents and reagents used in liquid-liquid extraction, along with the clarity required for accurate phase boundary observation.

Applications
- Liquid-liquid extraction — preparative and analytical scale extraction of compounds between immiscible liquid phases in pharmaceutical and analytical chemistry workflows
- Pharmaceutical synthesis and purification — extraction and purification steps during laboratory-scale pharmaceutical synthesis and natural product isolation
- Analytical sample preparation — liquid-liquid extraction of analytes from aqueous matrices prior to chromatographic or spectrophotometric analysis
- Solvent washing — washing of organic extracts with aqueous solutions to remove impurities during purification procedures
- Partition coefficient determination — measurement of compound distribution between organic and aqueous phases in pharmaceutical research and physicochemical characterisation workflows
Squibb vs Pear Shape — Choosing the Right Separating Funnel
The Squibb shape separating funnel is the preferred choice for large-volume extractions where maximising body volume for a given height is important. For applications where a more compact and traditional pear shape is preferred — particularly in smaller-scale analytical extractions — the Pear Shape Separating Funnel with PTFE Stopcock is available in the same capacity range.
